Tucson Turf Selection, Overseeding and Watering Reference

This page records what Tucson Water and University of Arizona Cooperative Extension publish about
lawns in the Tucson area: the water situation, which grass is best adapted to the heat, how a lawn
is kept green through winter, and how much water winter turf needs. Each figure is attributed to
the publication it comes from, with the date it was read.

The water situation

Tucson Water is under a Critical Water Alert tied to Colorado River constraints, and year-round
water-waste rules apply. Landscape decisions here are made against a standing constraint rather
than a seasonal one.

Which grass is best adapted

University of Arizona Cooperative Extension names the low desert of Arizona, which it states
includes Tucson, as an area where bermudagrass is the best adapted turfgrass for the heat and its
water requirements.

Overseeding for winter colour

Bermudagrass goes dormant in winter. A cool-season grass is seeded into it beforehand to hold
colour through the cool months.

Nighttime air temperature at overseeding about 55 F

How much water winter turf needs

Between November and May, a range of one-half to one and one-half inches per week of water may
be needed by the winter turf. That range is stated for winter turf generally. Monthly figures
published alongside it are derived from weather-station data for a different Arizona city and are
not reproduced here.
