Bermudagrass goes dormant and browns off in winter. Overseeding puts a cool-season grass
into the existing turf beforehand so the lawn holds colour. University of Arizona Cooperative Extension
publishes both the timing and the rate.
Timing is governed by temperature, not the calendar alone
October is ideal for overseeding, when daytime air temperatures are 80-85 F and nighttimes are about
55 F. Going early, while days are still hotter, favours the bermudagrass that is meant to be slowing
down.

Why bermudagrass is the base in the first place
In the low desert of Arizona, an area the publication states includes Tucson, bermudagrass is the
best adapted turfgrass for the heat and its water requirements. Overseeding does not replace it; it
covers its dormant months.
Winter watering
Between November and May, a range of one-half to one and one-half inches per week of water may be
needed by the winter turf.
